Solaris 10 and Intel 915GM/GMS chipset
Mar 30, 2006 12:18 PM
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on a new Sony FS550 laptop. I am
stuck trying to configure the video adapter. The Intel VESA generic
driver works under the Xsun manager but I cannot get a higher
resolution that 1024x768. This laptop has a WXGA display that runs
1280x800. I would like to get it to fill the screen but no matter what
I try I have not been able to get it to run at anyting above 1024x768.
A new patch has become available that now supposedly includes the 915
chipset in the i810 driver using the xorg manager. Unfortuately when I
select this driver the windowing system will not start. The same
occures with Xsun when I select the i810 driver. I need to locate a
solution.

The Xorg i810 driver shipped in Solaris 10 supports the Intel 915 and
915G, but not yet the 915GM. The open source release has been updated
to add 915GM support and that is currently undergoing testing in Sun to
determine if it can be released as a patch to our Solaris 10 release in
the future.
The blastwave project has also built a set of Xorg driver updates for
testing, and made them available at <a
href="http://blastwave.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/csw/users/kenmays/x11_drivers-6.8.2,REV=04.21.2005-SunOS5.8-i386-CSW.pkg.gz"

s/x11_drivers-6.8.2,REV=04.21.2005-SunOS5.8-i386-CSW.pkg.gz</a>
but I have not tested them, nor checked to see if they include the
915GM support. (And of course, blastwave is a community project, and
Sun tech support cannot help with any problems you may encounter with
the use of it.)
As for the resolution problems with the existing drivers, check for
messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log about why the drivers choose to use or
not use specific screen sizes, and check your mode settings in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf. <a
href="http://www.softorchestra.com/xorg/"
target="_blank">http://www.softorchestra.com/xorg/</a> has a
selection of sample xorg.conf files you may be able to find a similar
setup in.

Alan, Thank you for the information. I
have been working with the xorg.conf file and have tried a couple of
different configurations. I keep getting VBESetVBEMode failed. Not sure
what is causing this but I will keep researching. Hopefully the updated
drivers will be out soon. I tried the open source link that you
provided but it does not have the Intel 915GM Chipset support.
